orbit map, or something like it
There are two things I have not been able to figure out and I want to write them down before the detail erodes. The first is why this paper. The paper is not printer paper. It is the kind of matte cardstock they use for instructional diagrams, the type that comes inside electronics packaging, and the print quality is not a home printer. Someone ran this through something commercial or institutional. That matters. That means someone went to the trouble of producing this at a level that implies access. You do not fold a color-matched cardstock diagram in half and tuck it into a stranger's owner's manual on accident. You do not have that document to begin with on accident.
The second thing is the escalation order. Left to right is not the only way to read it. I have tried reading it right to left and the escalation is still there, it just reverses, which means the sequence is bilateral. It reads forward and backward as an escalating series. That is not a feature you get from random arrangement. I had my brother-in-law look at it without telling him where it came from and he said it reminded him of a textbook he had in school, a physics text, orbital decay configurations. He said it without prompting. He has never looked at a thing I showed him and named it correctly before. Usually he tells me I am reading into it. He did not say that this time.
The man at the hardware store said the name and I wrote it down when I got to the car. I am not putting the name in here yet because putting it in writing in a public location changes what the name means, and I need to think about that more carefully before I do it. I will say that the name he said is a name I have heard before, in a different context, from a different person, months ago, when I was not keeping records yet. That is the part that is keeping me awake. Not the diagram. The name.
I have been trying to figure out who left this for me specifically and whether the leaving was intended as communication or as documentation. If it was communication then someone is trying to tell me something through a medium that requires I already know enough to understand it. If it was documentation then someone is recording that I was in that car at a specific point in time and the diagram is the proof. I cannot tell which of those is worse.
