The interval pages are still up if anyone wants to check the math themselves, I am not retyping three hypotheses I already eliminated in march. what I did last night was different and it was not planned. I was testing an old set with no antenna hooked up, just to see the noise floor before I touched anything else, and I pointed my phone at the screen because I wanted a print of it. something physical. a screenshot can be regenerated. a photo of a screen cannot be faked the same way, or it can, but not by me, not by accident. dont ask me why that distinction mattered at almost four in the morning. it mattered.
I counted the bars. I know how that sounds. there are forty five of them stacked top to bottom, wait, I recounted, forty four the first time, forty five the second, forty five is the real number, and forty five divided by five is nine. static does not resolve to a clean division that lands on the same number I already had from the recordings. the same nine from march. the same nine that survived a hardware reset and a dead relay link and two people who never got to hear the file before it was gone. a scan bar count on a screen with no input signal should not agree with an acoustic dropout interval from a different device in a different month, in a different room. Anyway, the tv is an old set, mid 2000s I think, I dont remember the model, my mother had one almost like it in the kitchen and it never pulled more than four channels even with the antenna up.
Coincidence? No. I dont believe in coincidence and I dont believe in ghosts either so do not write to me about either one. I am not the first person to count something on a dead channel, they knew that before I did, whoever they are, I have stopped trying to separate the who from the what. check your own set if you still have a tube one in a closet. unplug the antenna. point a camera at it. count the bars. tell me what you get. I am not saying it will be nine for you. I am saying it was nine for me twice now, from two directions that have no business agreeing.

If the artifact were hardware failure -- connector noise, thermal dropout, power fluctuation -- then the interval would drift. Any physical failure mode that repeats has a tolerance range. Mechanical repetition accumulates error over time; the interval would be nine seconds on the first occurrence and nine-point-three or eight-point-eight on the third. It is nine, exactly, all three times. The only way to get that without drift is if the source of the artifact is not physical hardware. It is either digital -- a process that fires on a precise timer -- or it is a signal that was in the original audio environment when the recording was made.
A process firing on a precise timer would be software -- something running on the recording device or on a network it was connected to. The recording device was in airplane mode. I checked the session logs after the fact. No network connections during the recording window. If it is software it is software installed on the device that runs offline. I have since factory reset the device. I cannot test that hypothesis on the original hardware anymore.
If the signal was in the audio environment -- broadcast, physical, ambient -- then something in the space where I was recording was producing a structured nine-second signal. I was in a parked car on a public street. I do not know what was producing that signal or why it would be structured. I know that structured signals in that frequency band do not happen without infrastructure behind them, somebody has to be running something to put a nine second interval into open air on purpose or even by accident, and running it costs money and hours and somebody had to decide it was worth running near me, in that spot, on that night. I dont know who decided that. I know somebody did.
