The Roof Instead
23:41 — two masts on the roof, one bracket new, circled the one that is
The roof access door by the stairwell has been unlocked since before I moved in, I have said that on here before about other doors in other buildings, never about this one, because this one was never the point, the electrical room was the point, forty feet from where I sleep, I have already said forty feet three times on three different pages and I am not going to stop saying it because it is still forty feet. I did not go up there for the notice tonight. I went up because the supers ladder was still out against the wall by the propane cage and a door that is never propped was propped, and if you have read anything I have written you already know I cannot walk past an open door that should not be open, I already walked through that logic on the perimeter work months ago and nothing about it has changed.
Two masts up there. Not one, two, and I have lived under this roof three years and could have told you, if you had asked, that there was one, a single mast painted the same white as the parapet so you'd miss it if you werent looking, and I was not looking, until tonight I was not looking, and now there are two and one of them is newer, you can tell by the bracket, the bracket on the second one isnt weathered the same, its still got the manufacturer sticker half peeled instead of gone all the way. I counted twice standing up there in the dark with my neck craned back like an idiot. Two. My father used to say a thing about towers and lightning that I am not going to repeat because I do not actually believe it, I believe in schedules and I believe in bracket hardware, same as I said about the fourth occurrence page, three is data, two is what they call coincidence, apparently that goes for antenna brackets too.
I took the photo. First one in three tries if you have been keeping up, and yes I know how that looks, that I will point a camera at a piece of aluminum pipe against the sky but not at a laminated sheet of paper forty feet closer to where I actually sleep, I have thought about that and I do not have an answer that makes me look reasonable so I am not going to manufacture one for you. The circled one is the newer one. I am not going down to the electrical room tonight to check if there's a fourth. If it happened a fourth time I said I would get the photo and I did, technically, just not of that, and I know thats not the same thing. Dont write in about it. I already know.

The Notice On My Own Door
no photo this time, hand wouldn't do it, same font, same buckle, forty feet from my door
Its on my building now. Not a building I drove out to look at, not the storage bay past the county line, not any of the ones I went and photographed on purpose for the fourth occurrence page, this one is forty feet from where I sleep, taped to the frame of the electrical room by the stairwell where the meters are, and I walked past it twice before my brain caught up with my eyes and made me go back. Same laminate. Same buckle at the corner like it got wet once and dried under its own weight. The font is small for the page again, header pushed left of center again, I have said this three times now on the other pages and I am not going to pretend I am being clever by saying it a fourth time in a new way, its the same, that is the whole point, that is the only point, sameness at this scale is not a coincidence, two people do not independently produce identical margin errors on unrelated forms in unrelated buildings unless the form is the same file printed by the same hand or the same small group of hands who never bothered to fix the template because why would they, nobody reads a maintenance notice closely enough to notice the kerning except me, except now, except here, at my own door.
I did not photograph it. First time I have skipped that and I know how that sounds, I who go on about documentation, who have entire pages arguing that three is data and two is what they call coincidence, and here I am standing in my own stairwell with my phone already up and I could not make my hand press the button. Some things you dont want a copy of because a copy means it happened somewhere other then just in your head, and I already know it happened, I dont need the second proof, I need it to not have happened at all, which is not a sentence a documentarian is supposed to write but I am writing it. The breaker room smells like the inside of an old radio, that hot dust smell, my grandfather kept a shortwave in the garage that smelled the same way when it had been on too long. Anyway. The camera work is still up if that matters to anyone, I am not disowning any of it. This one I am just describing instead. Adhesive looked fresh. Not old-fresh, not sun-baked, fresh like this week, maybe today, the edges hadn't started curling the way tape does after a few days of hallway heat.
Whoever put a copy of the same notice inside my own building did not need a reason a resident would question, that was the whole argument on the access notes above, the clipboard buys silence, the notice buys the same silence without even needing a person attached to it, it can just be there, doing its job, until I am the only one in the building who has read three of them closely enough to know they are the same document wearing a different address, the same way the address work kept turning up the same numbers under different names. I dont know what the document is actually for. I have never seen anyone remove one. I have never caught the hand that tapes it up. Anyway.
Not going deeper on this one tonight. If it happens a fourth time inside my own walls I will go back and get the photo, hand steady or not.
UPDATE 8/27:
Second one. Mail room this time, not the stairwell, other end of the building, taped inside the frame around the package lockers where nobody looks up because everybody is looking down at the little screen that tells you which locker is yours today. Same laminate. Same buckle at the corner, worse on this one, wetter, like it rode around in somebody's bag before it went up. I said I would get the photo if it happened a fourth time. This isnt the fourth time by the real count, its the fifth if you start counting from the storage bay, but its the SECOND time inside my own walls in nine days and nobody has explained to me why nine matters except its the number I have, so thats the number I am using.
I told myself Tuesday walking down there. It was Wednesday. Doesnt matter, the tape doesnt know what day it is either, the tape doesnt know anything, that's the whole argument, that's always been the whole argument, a piece of laminate cant have an opinion about my building, only a hand can, and I still havent seen the hand.
I did not take the photo. Second time I havent. I stood in the mail room with the door propped by the mop bucket the super always leaves there and my phone already up, already unlocked, camera icon already tapped, and my thumb just would not close the last inch to the shutter. I have written whole pages arguing three is data and two is what people call coincidence and here I am refusing my own evidence at two, at my own address, for the second time running. Some things you dont want a copy of. I said that nine days ago and it is apparently still true and I am apparently the kind of documentarian who only documents the buildings that arent his.
The lockers have combination dials that havent worked since before I moved in. Everyone uses the master key the super keeps on a wire loop clipped to his belt, has for years. They know the lockers dont lock. Everyone knows, nobody says anything, that's not the same as nobody noticing. Wire loop. My father wore his keys the same way, looped through a belt hook, so you always heard him three rooms off before you saw him. Anyway. The kerning is the same left-pushed header I already logged on the fourth occurrence page, same font pretending to be a different form in a different building, Ill say that part again because it matters and I dont trust you to hold onto it the first time. My neighbor says I look tired. I am tired.
Whoever is doing this doesnt need my building to be special, that was already the argument on the address work, the same numbers turn up under different names because the names were never the point, the building was never the point, availability was the point, and my building is available, I live here, I have a mailbox, the lockers dont lock right, easiest building on the list. Two now. In nine days. In my own walls.
Not going to a third location tonight. I say that every time.
