I ran the same route again twenty minutes later and the truck was no longer at the curb where I first photographed it. It had moved two blocks east and was now parked against a loading zone with no active deliveries and no one visible in the cab. Same white body, same ladder rack, and the dent on the rear door sat in the exact same place, not a similar dent, not the same style of dent, the same physical dent, I checked the panel crease against my first photo before I let myself write this sentence. that is not casual movement and I have stopped calling it that even in my head. staging. two words, not the sentence I want, but it is the accurate one, and I do not have a better one yet.

Location was never the whole pattern. I kept photographing the truck like the parking spot mattered and the parking spot was only ever the first half, the second half is timing, when it shows up matters as much as where, and I did not clock that until I laid the timestamps out side by side. The truck appears in windows where pedestrian traffic thins but the cameras still hold a clean line. that window is where the hand-off happens. I am documenting this as a route problem because route problems can be measured, and measured things are harder to dismiss than impressions. UPDATE 8/16:

the truck was back at the loading zone this morning. not staged. not repositioned. just there, cab empty, hazards off, like it had been parked since March and I only now noticed. same ladder rack. same rear door dent, I checked it against the first photo, its the same crease, not a similar one. Ive stopped assuming it moves on a schedule I can catch. I think it moves on a schedule I cant.

five months, closer to six probably, Ive lost the exact count and that bothers me more than the truck does some days. what doesnt bother me is the corridor. the same offset bolt pattern turned up forty minutes down this road on a different box entirely, the twin to the intersection box, same wear, same three bolts, and Im not saying the truck services that box. Im saying somebody drives this exact stretch enough to know both locations by feel. Anyway. it didnt relocate today. today it just waited, and waiting means the window already opened somewhere and I missed the minute.

pulled this off the public feed for the corridor two exits down, camera 398, park and ride lot built for maybe forty cars. dated the fourth, not today, I keep a folder of these and go back through it after I see the truck in person, cross reference. one vehicle. parked alone in a lot with nothing else in it. doesnt have to be the truck. doesnt have to not be it either. a lot that size does not need one car parked dead center of an empty row unless somebody wanted a clear line of sight to both entrances.
